Our family in Volendam, Netherland 1973

Today the family concept has changed and most likely will continue to transform through time. Family can be two or more than twenty, and sometimes blood connects family members, and other times, families evolve from uplifting, supportive friendships.

Food, water, clothing, shelter, and cherishing human relations are all fundamental for survival. In the last decade, the emptiness of the family unit is becoming more evident in many cultures around the globe. The challenges are huge.

We need support and encouragement from others now more than ever. Loneliness, depression, and outbreaks of aggression are alarming, and we must become more attentive to mental health issues.

Family Is Steady

Family is crucial to my husband, daughter, and me. And, very often, we don’t agree with each other. We push the boundaries of each other’s reality and comfort zones. We tell each other a hundred times: “Come back and listen deeply. Relax and breathe deeply. Acknowledge the incredible being that each one of us is.”

Yes, true. And we still keep shoving each other to grow, grow up, and grow in more compassion.

What aspects of family are most dear to you?
